There are some brief adult situations off the top, this is a PG-13 kind of drama. I’ve been referring to it as the Blue Valentine of pet movies. Piper is truly the Ryan Gosling of dogs.

It was interesting to veer away from the usual comedy and horror and do something a little more artistic and dramatic. It’s back to genre films as we get set to produce the web series Stealtown, but I think there’ll be another dramatic film in the not-so-distant future.

Hopefully this is a first step into the world of dance. I’m a long time musical and dance movie fan, and I’d love to make a dance film that wasn’t about saving the community centre or bridging ballet and hip hop. I’m lookin’ at you, Step Up and Save The Last Dance.

On the way home from dropping it off, I decided the name needed changing. Too late for the official submission, but I think rather than its current title Hereford, it will go by Shades of Purple, Swirls of White in the future.

The story is inspired a bit by Withnail and I, Waiting for Godot, and the train station outside my window. There was a little bit of Carnivale rolling around in my head for one of the characters, but I don’t think that’ll be obvious as she doesn’t have any psychic powers or the ability to dance with snakes.

The lenses are the very affordable Samyang primes, in this case the 35mm f1.4, the 85mm f1.4, and the 14mm f2.8. In North America, they’re sold under the brand names Bower and Rokinon, and can be had for a really great price at B&H Photo (mixing and matching the Rokinon and Bower brands will get you the best price). The 14mm was used on the two jib shots for which I used my fairly new Kessler Crane KC-lite. It also features my nice, new Dan Wesson 2.5 inch barrel revolver BB-gun, which I figure might come in handy for any film noiry things I might do.

We shot this in the beautiful Crook’s Hollow area of the West Flamborough area. There are so many incredible locations to explore there, if you live in Southern Ontario, I highly encourage a visit. All the sound effects were put in in post, except for the scene of the car pulling away. It isn’t perfect, but I’m pretty happy with my foley editing.
