Years ago, a friend pitched me a few projects. One included the setting of a man writing his wife a letter in a candlelit room. That project never came to fruition, but I loved the setting and the idea of a monologue done in that way. I transposed that setting to a time when it would fit, the 1860s, and came up with this story. A Victorian man composes a letter to the woman he loves. But as he unburdens [...]

I was hoping to get a last minute entry into the Malabar 2012 video contest, and this was the result. Then I discovered that the minimum length for an entry was two minutes, and so all I have is an odd little film instead of the free costumes and make-up I hoped to attain. I’ve written another scene since uploading that takes the story to a better, more fitting conclusion, but for now this is Sam’s Smile. Share on Facebook [...]

stealtown

A few months back, I posted a title sequence for a non-existent TV show called Stealtown. Since then, I’ve been slowly writing a script for a six part webseries for the show. It’s a film noirish story of an ex-reporter turned private eye, who’s hired to track down a con man who uses his charm to fleece Hamilton’s upper crust. But as the detective gets closer to his mark, he begins to discover that the con man might not be [...]

In March and April, I shot some photos for my friend Rachel Shute’s new jewellery line, City and Cedar. Here are some of my favourite shots from the lookbook and catalogue photos, as well as the behind the scenes video shoot from the lookbook photoshoot. I was in Edmonton a few weeks ago and met Cameron Browne, pianist for the jazz group Quordal Fusion. They were gearing up for a big show where they were backing hip-hop group Politic Live, and I shot a little promo for the event. If you’re in Edmonton this weekend, get yourself to the Pawn Shop. I was out in Banff and Lake Louise last week and met up with model Emma Wehner to shoot some photos. Lake Louise has remarkably diverse locations- every few feet you’ll look off the main path and see the landscape change. It made for some excellent backdrops, and Emma was daring enough to clamber over a lot of dangerous terrain to get some really nice shots. This is a film I put together with director of photography extraordinaire Matthew Wocks, actress Sara Miller, and my brother’s dog Piper. We were aiming to enter this into Youtube’s Your Film Festival, and I got the final edit together just a few hours before the deadline. There are some brief adult situations off the top, this is a PG-13 kind of drama. I’ve been referring to it as the Blue Valentine of pet movies. Piper is truly the Ryan [...]

Here’s a video I shot for the Tone Williams Project, a dance entertainment company in Toronto. It was a lot of fun to put this together, and working with the amazing director/choreographer Anthony Williams and his team was a great experience. You can find out more about them on their website. Hopefully this is a first step into the world of dance. I’m a long time musical and dance movie fan, and I’d love to make a dance film that [...]

I just dropped my submission to the Toronto Star short story contest in a big blue box so jammed with entries that the lid had burst off. Deadline is midnight tonight, and I was up ’til 6am last night polishing up the grammar, and finding 85 extraneous words so I could hit the 2500 limit. On the way home from dropping it off, I decided the name needed changing. Too late for the official submission, but I think rather than [...]

I picked up a couple of new prime lenses last week, and thought it was time to shoot something new and test them out. So we shot a little fake title sequence in Hamilton and Burlington for a cop/caper show. The lenses are the very affordable Samyang primes, in this case the 35mm f1.4, the 85mm f1.4, and the 14mm f2.8. In North America, they’re sold under the brand names Bower and Rokinon, and can be had for a really [...]
